With over forty years of real world experience on the original New Haven Railroad, Penn Central, Amtrak and the Housatonic Railroad, Rick Abramson set out to model his favorite road as accurately as possible. The result is a stunning HO Scale replica of the New Haven Railroad as it was under electrified catenary wire in Connecticut.
Carefully researched, Rick has meticulously recreated a seldom modeled feature of the New Haven. His overhead catenary system follows the prototype to near exactness; including it’s floating beams and anchor bridges that helped carry 11,000
volts to the NH’s heavy electric motors.
The New Haven was famous for it’s four track mainline. By way of selective compression and thoughtful planning, Rick
has built in a section of busy four track; all under the complex catenary above. You’ll see heavy electric motors like EP-5 “Jets” and MU “ Washboards” roar by landmark New Haven locales like Devon and Bridgeport as well as the famous Jenkin’s Curve. Aside from his acurate portrayal of the New Haven’s engineering marvel, Rick’s catenary modeling is visually stunning to look at. Its delicate balance and intricate silhouettes can share a page with many other master works of art. Rick’s layout has been featured in Model Railroader magazine.
In addition to a tour of Rick’s New Haven layout, in this DVD, we’ll also take a brief tour on the current Housatonic
Railroad. Rick is the superintendent of operations for the freight hauling Housatonic. Watch train number NX12 get
put together and head off to Pittsfield in Canaan, CT on former New Haven Railroad tracks.
